Physiotherapy

 

Physiotherapists are autonomous practitioner  who diagnose and treat disorders of movement, function, and human performance caused by activity, injury, disease, disability or ageing, particularly those that affect the muscles, bones, joints, nervous system, heart, circulation and lungs. They identify and maximize movement and function through health promotion, preventative healthcare, treatment and rehabilitation using a variety of physical, electro-physical, cognitive and pharmacological agents.

Physiotherapy is a crucial element of the rehabilitation process and covers a diverse range of approaches such as manual therapy, vertebral therapy, exercise therapy, and electrotherapy. The service is provided in both in-patients and out-patients. Out-patient services are provided at CRP-Savar, CRP-Mirpur, A.K Khan-CRP Chittagong center, Sylhet Moulovi Bazar. Out patients physiotherapy services are also going to be started soon in proposed divisional center in Rajshahi and Barishal.

Physiotherapists in CRP are primary health care professionals so patients do not require a physician referral to visit a Physiotherapist. Physiotherapists at CRP have developed competency to perform differential diagnosis regarding each of the primary Physiotherapy areas including: Orthopedics, Neurology and Pediatrics.

Different specialty of Physiotherapy services are provided by the following unit:

  • Out patient Physiotherapy Musculo-skeletal unit-Patients with neck pain, back pain, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, frozen shoulder, tennis elbow and other conditions are treated in this unit. The concepts that apply to  treat the patients are included Mckenzie, Maitland, Mobilization with Movement and Cyriax.


  • Out patient adult Neurological Rehabilitation unit- Patients with stroke, head injury, GBS, poliomyelitis, multiple sclerosis, parkinson disease, nerve injury, bell's palsy, motor neuron disease are treated in the unit. PNF, bobath and other neurological rehabilitation concepts are used here to treat a wide range of neurologically impaired patients.


  • Out patients and in patient Paediatric unit-Child hood disabilities particularly cerebral palsy and other conditions such as down syndrome, myopathy, club feet cases are treated in the unit. Patients receive either in or out patient services based on the needs of individual patients.

 

  • In patient Spinal Cord Injury Rehabilitation unit- Physiotherapists ensure comprehensive rehabilitation services since patients admission until discharge of the patients. Physical rehabilitation starts with providing chest physiotherapy for the acute patients  and it continues through improving mobility, balance, coordination, gait re-education, lifting and transferring from one place to another as the patients progress. Community Based Rehabilitation (CBR) services are also provided by Physiotherapist to make sure appropriate social rehabilitation after being discharged from CRP.

 

Over the years, CRP has developed its physiotherapy  services  through continuous professional developmental program. For having good international connection, standard of Physiotherapy practice and education offered by CRP are now world standard. Thousands of Patients have been benefited through receiving Physiotherapy from CRP. Recently Physiotherapy department has launched Sports Rehabilitation Unit and Gymnasium. Specialist services have also been provided for the cases of stroke through Stroke Rehabilitation Unit.

CRP continues to host student placements in the Physiotherapy Department, both for students of the BHPI (the academic institute of CRP) and for students from overseas. A professional development programme has also been put in place in order to develop skill and efficiency for the young professionals. The Physiotherapy Department also supports a large number of research projects conducted by final year BSc in Physiotherapy students from BHPI. Through assessment and problem oriented medical record are ensured by individual physiotherapist as a part of quality assurance. Clinical audit is conducted quarterly to ensure the standard of services. Meanwhile, Physiotherapists of CRP are involved in continuous research activities. The Therapist are committed to provide evidence based practice in all clinical areas.

At present, there are three different categories of Physiotherapist are involved in providing services including Physiotherapist, diploma physiotherapist and physiotherapy assistance and the total number of them are 90 who are working at CRP head quarter and its all sub-centers.

Critical and challenging  patients care and case presentation are conducted by the Professors and respective clinical specialist once  a week.
